Orthodontics:

An orthodontic treatment, or what is commonly known as braces, is used to correct teeth that are not well positioned or crooked. This condition is known as a malocclusion and it can be having protruded, retruded, crowded or separated teeth, and many other problems in position. In some cases, even if the teeth appear straight, they may not meet properly. A malocclusion can be only dental or sometimes it can also be skeletal involving a discrepancy in the upper and lower jaw bones. Most people want to have straight teeth just for appearance but more importantly this type of treatment leads to healthier teeth and gums as they are easier to clean and there is less plaque build up when teeth are well aligned. The food also slides over straight teeth naturally but tends to stay trapped when teeth are crooked. Also when teeth are badly positioned they can interfere with chewing and speaking and the enamel can wear out faster and in ways that cause other problems.
An orthodontic treatment consists in bonding small metal pieces called brackets to the teeth. Later these brackets will be tied to wires that tend to align the teeth. Also different types of ligatures and rubber bands are used to pull teeth into the desired position. All of this is planned and coordinated by a specialist in Orthodontics.

Invisalign:

Invisalign is a type of orthodontic treatment that consists in a series of clear plastic aligner trays that can sometimes be used as an alternative to traditional metal dental braces. These aligners have the advantage that they are barely visible and although they have to be used all day and night during the treatment they can be removed to eat and brush your teeth. Approximately every two weeks the aligner is changed for a new one that positions the teeth closer to the final desired position.
